Nikki Haley Suspends Presidential Campaign
Haley, the first woman governor of South Carolina, exits the race after lackluster poll numbers and fundraising.
Haley's campaign struggled to gain traction in a crowded Republican field, despite her high-profile resume.
Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and United States ambassador to the United Nations, has suspended her presidential campaign.
Haley, who was the first woman to serve as governor of South Carolina, entered the race in February 2023, but struggled to gain traction in a crowded Republican field. She had been polling in the low single digits and had not raised the funds necessary to compete with the frontrunners.
In a statement announcing her decision, Haley said that she believes that “America is not past our prime” and that she “will continue to fight for our country in the years to come.” She did not endorse any other candidate.
Haley’s exit from the race leaves the Republican field with several high-profile candidates, including former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Political analysts say Haley's exit is a sign that the Republican field is narrowing and that the frontrunners are emerging. It also underscores the challenges facing female candidates in the GOP.
